Experiment 10: The enthalpy of decomposition of calcium carbonate

To find the enthalpy of decomposition of calcium carbonate

The reactions of acids have been discussed and the students are aware that both calcium oxide and calcium carbonate react exothermically with hydrochloric acid

Instructions given

As this is a planning experiment the instructions given are minimal and the students should decide for themselves how this experiment should be carried out, including all apparatus, quantities and materials.

Materials available

  • Dilute hydrochloric acid (2M)
  • Calcium carbonate powder
  • Calcium oxide powder

Experimental report

The following factors will be assessed:-

  • Suitable hypothesis and variable selection
  • Suitable selection of apparatus and materials
  • Accurate recording of raw data
  • Presentation of raw data
  • Data analysis and presentation
  • Evaluation of errors both qualitative and numerical
