Criterion: Planning (a)

Problem definition Prediction Variable selection
Complete Problem / research question clearly defined Hypothesis directly related to the question and explained Key variables selected

Partial Problem stated but not defined or is unclear / incomplete Hypothesis stated but not explained Some variables selected

Not at all No problem is stated No hypothesis No variables selected

Criterion: Planning (b)

Designing a method.... ...with appropriate apparatus/materials ...for the control of variables ...for the collection of raw data
Complete Appropriate apparatus/ materials selected A realistic method that allows control of the variables is designed A method that allows for collection of sufficient relevant data and excludes the collection of irrelevant data is designed

Partial Some appropriate materials selected or some essential features are missing A method that makes some attempt to allow for the control of the variables is designed A method that allows the collection of insufficient data or both relevant and irrelevant data is designed

Not at all No apparatus / materials are selected A method that makes no attempt to allow for the control of the variables is designed A method that only allows collection of irrelevant data is designed or no method is designed

Criterion: Data Collection

Level Observing, collecting and recording raw data Presentation of raw data

Complete Raw data (qualitative and quantitative) recorded appropriately, including units and uncertainties where necessary Raw data presented clearly, allowing for easy interpretation.

Partial Some raw data recorded Raw data presented in a disorganised manner.

Not at all No raw data recorded No raw data presented or is incomprehensible.

Criterion: Data Analysis

Level Transformation and manipulation of raw data Presentation of processed data

Complete Raw data is processed correctly to produce results which help interpretation: Where appropriate, error analysis is included Presents processed data appropriately and, where relevant, errors and uncertainties are taken into account

Partial Some raw data is processed correctly Presents processed data appropriately but with some errors and/or omissions

Not at all No processing of raw data is carried out or major errors are made in the process Presents processed data inappropriately or incomprehensibly

Criterion: Evaluation

Designing a method.... Interpreting results drawing conclusions Evaluating procedure Modifying the procedure
Complete Valid conclusion based on the correct interpretation of results with an explanation. Where appropriate there is comparison with literature values Evaluates procedure(s) and results including limitations, weaknesses or errors Identifies weaknesses and states realistic suggestions to improve the investigation

Partial The conclusion has some validity Evaluates procedure(s) and results but misses some obvious limitations or errors. Suggestions stated but are simplistic

Not at all Draws a conclusion that misinterprets the results. The evaluation is superficial or irrelevant. Suggests unrealistic improvements

Criterion: Manipulative skills

Indications of manipulative ability are the amount of assistance required in assembling apparatus, the orderliness of carrying out the procedures, the ability to follow the instructions accurately and adherence to safe working practices.

Level Carrying out techniques safely Following a variety of instructions

Complete Is competent and methodical in the use of techniques and the equipment and pays attention to safety issues Follows the instructions accurately, adapting to new circumstances (seeking assistance when required)

Partial Requires assistance in the use of routine techniques. Works in a safe manner with occasional prompting Follows the instructions but requires assistance

Not at all Does not carry out the techniques or misuses the equipment showing no regard for safety Does not follow the instructions or requires constant supervisions.

Complete Collaborates with others, recognising their needs, in order to complete the task Expects, actively seeks and acknowledges the views of others Exchanges ideas with others, integrating them into the task

Partial Requires guidance ot collaborate with others Acknowledges some views Exchanges ideas with others but requires guidance in integrating them into the task

Complete Approaches the investigation with self-motivation and follows it through to completion Pays considerable atention to the authenticity of the data and information and the approach to materials (living or non-living) Pays considerable attention to the environmental impact of the investigation.

Partial Requires guidance ot collaborate with others Pays some atention to the authenticity of the data and information and the approach to materials (living or non-living) Pays some attention to the environmental impact of the investigation.

Not at all Lacks perseverence and motivation Pays little atention to the authenticity of the data and information and the approach to materials (living or non-living) Pays little attention to the environmental impact of the investigation.
